"TRANSIT(ION) Trilogy: Emigration Transformation” tells the epic story of the exodus of the Eastern European Jews in the late 1800's, their immigration to America, early life in New York's lower east side, and their descendants’ artistic contributions to mainstream American culture.
The narration tracks this progression through excerpts of text from letters, poems, newspaper clippings and novels. The music flows through the decades - opening in klezmer and ending in rap – and the movement style ranges from folk dance to contemporary ballet.
Parallels can be drawn to the current ethnic and religious issues regarding immigration in the U.S. and throughout the world. The piece can also be enjoyed simply for its beautiful dancing, musical interest, narration, and historic video, which provide thought-provoking, heartwarming and visually appealing entertainment.
This is a work-in-progress performance of the TRANSIT(ION) Trilogy, to be premiered in Copenhagen in June and performed in Las Vegas and New York in the Fall of 2011. The project is planned to tour the southwestern states in Fall 2011 and nationally in 2012.
Performers include dancers Theresa Duhon, Jennifer Golonka, Andrea Dusel-Foil, Bethany Lange, Tara Nicolas, Mary Ellen Beaudreau, Lutin Tanner and Kevin Burke, and narrator Janelle Lannan, with visuals by David VanVranken, costumes by Dolly Kelepecz, choreography and script by Margot Mink Colbert.
